Stone Village Nabs Academy Award Winners Bass and Goldman

Los Angeles, CA (March 27, 2006) – Stone Village has tapped Academy Award-winning screenwriters Ron Bass (Rain Man) and Bo Goldman (One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest) to write two of its most anticipated upcoming projects. Bass will adapt the Nicholas Sparks bestseller “True Believer” for producers Scott Steindorff and Robin Greenspun. Goldman will adapt the planned remake of the classic 1955 heist classic Rififi for star Al Pacino and director Harold Becker. Steindorff will produce Rififi and Stone Village exec Scott Lastaiti will co-produce.

True Believer tells a love story with supernatural elements, following a writer for Scientific American who debunks myths and frauds, but finds himself questioning his cynicism when he travels to a small town in North Carolina and falls for the granddaughter of the town psychic. Spark’s other novels include “The Notebook,” “A Walk to Remember,” and “Message in a Bottle.” Filming is slated to begin next year.

Rififi tells the story of a career thief who, upon leaving prison, discovers his wife has left him and finds himself returning to crime with a planned jewelry store heist. The French original was directed by Jules Dassin. The remake will mark the third collaboration between Pacino and Becker (after Sea of Love and City Hall) with production to begin later this year.

“Ron and Bo are two of cinema’s most distinguished and talented writers,” stated Steindorff. “To have them lending their considerable gifts to these very different projects is enormously exciting.”

Bass has amassed one of the most impressive screenwriting resumes of the past two decades. In addition to his Oscar-winning work on Rain Man, his credits include Sleeping with the Enemy, The Joy Luck Club, When a Man Loves a Woman, Dangerous Minds, Waiting to Exhale, My Best Friend’s Wedding and Stepmom. His next film, the love story Mozart and the Whale starring Josh Hartnett, opens in April.

Bass was brought to Stone Village by IPG head Joel Gotler and manager Melinda Jason.

Goldman received the Academy Award, Golden Globe and WGA awards for One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, as well as a second Oscar and WGA Award, and trophies from the National Society and New York film critics’ groups for Melvin and Howard. He garnered a third Oscar nomination and second Golden Globe award for Scent of a Woman. Other credits include The Rose, Shoot the Moon and City Hall.

Goldman was represented by his agency CAA and by his attorney Christine Cuddy of Kleinberg Lopez Lange Cuddy Edel & Klein in the deal with Stone Village.

Rififi and True Believer are the latest in a line of projects that Stone Village is committed to financing, coming from a fiscally conservative approach. The company is currently in production on the modern-day fable Penelope with Reese Witherspoon’s Type-A Films starring Christina Ricci, Witherspoon and Peter Dinklage. Stone Village partners include Scott Steindorff, Andrew Molasky, Danny and Robin Greenspun.

Steindorff recently wrapped the John Stockwell-helmed feature Turistas and was nominated for an Emmy as an Executive Producer for HBO's "Empire Falls," which received 10 Emmy nominations, including Best Miniseries, as well as the Golden Globe for Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television. Other forthcoming Stone Village features include Love in the Time of Cholera and The Tortilla Curtain.
